Cottages on Norris is a duplex located on a picturesque street in the coastal village of St. Mary's Georgia. Unit B is the back half of the duplex. Guests enter through a side gate that opens into a lovely covered living area perfect for reading and relaxing. Upon entering the unit, guests will find a space that is meant to be efficient, restful, light and happy. Although small, guests will enjoy a small living area, two comfortable bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom. Cottages on Norris are located walking and biking distance to the downtown St Mary's shopping, dining, and Cumberland Island Ferry. The owner provides two bikes for guests to enjoy!!

  • Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion that is part of a historic district that was the home of several families significant in American history. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972.

When we arrived I tried to figure out something that was inadequate and I thought- suitcase holder- but then I even found one of those in the closet! Everything was quite suitable for our needs, well supplied, all linens were clean and generous in number, the outdoor space was very private and comfortable. We enjoyed biking the area and also took the Cumberland Ferry trip. The location was perfect for our activities. Thank you for sharing your little piece of Norris Street paradise.

Really enjoyed our stay, unit was clean and comfortable. Location is very good, bicycles are provided but not used due to excessive temps. Amenities were good, washing machine a bit noisy, but worked well. A couple extra rolls of TP would have been good. Lovely little town, a list of local restaurants and merchants would be very helpful. Nice to have 2 parking spots, a note posted with the day trash/recycle goes to the curb would be good. Would gladly put barrels out for pickup, but didn't see message until the following day. We are not streaming savvy folks, and struggled to try to get live news and weather. Internet worked great.

Super cute place. Perfect location for what we needed. Love the little extra supplies and treats. I would recommend getting a bed that doesn't wiggle so much. It was hard for my husband and I to get sleep when one of us moved the whole bed wiggled. We would love to stay again! The host were wonderful about communicating and so easy to work with!

Weekend Getaway

Perfect place for a peaceful weekend getaway. The cottage is well equipped with nice outdoor areas. We walked to the riverfront and enjoyed strolling through historic St. Mary's. We would definitely return.

This unit, although small, was very adequate for our 2 month stay. It’s in the perfect location for walking to town and the waterfront, as well as exploring so many phenomenal bicycling routes and historical sights.This was our first time to St Mary’s and we hope to return some day.

Definitely a great location. Owners were very communicative. Place is close to the main town. 3 minutes from the National Park Visitor Center. Needs a tad of updating, we went to bar be cue and there was no gas. I can't give it half a star if not I would rate 4 1/2 stars.

Two Day visit to Historical St. Marys

The property is strategically located near the restaurants and historical downtown area. We had an amazing stay and the property completely satisfied our needs. It was nice and quiet and extremely comfortable. Proximity was key for us and it met our needs.

Vacation with friends.

We had a great time there. Place was all we expected it to be. Neat, clean and well maintained with supplies . Manger Brittany ,was super great!! Have stayed there before and will stay again. Especially unit “B”. Love the privacy you have there.
