The Madison River in southwest Montana is possibly the most famous in the state, known for its spectacular scenery and exceptional fishing. Both wild rainbow and large brown trout can be caught year-round on the 180-mile-long river. The Madison begins its descent in the western region of Yellowstone National Park, at the confluence of the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers, and makes its way north through the Madison River Valley before reaching and joining up with the Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers to become the mighty Missouri River. From the 50-mile riffle in the Upper Madison down to the more tranquil flow in the river’s lower reaches, anglers can find numerous places to enjoy casting their fly.
