Awesome quiet getaway spot
This is the perfect place for a quiet family getaway. House has everything you could ask for with comfortable beds and pillows. Full kitchen with spices on hand. Game room and dvds on first floor. Incredible views from balcony and snorkeling sets, kayaks, boogie boards etc. Private, primitive snorkeling site that can be reached scrambling over lava rocks (stairs washed out)- Not for small kiddos or anyone needing assistance, but most people would have no problem, especially since it’s so private & lots of fish! Canoe launch and beach just down the road for others. There is with grocery store about 30 mins away and house is down a twisting hill, but remote location is ideal to get away from tourist locations and an incredible night time star viewing! Will be going back. Host is terrific and will answer any questions you may have. Highly recommend!!

Gorgeous and Relaxing Spot on the Big Island
We loved this property! It is located outside of the hustle and bustle of Kona and Hilo, but the views and the house itself are worth the drive. Located about halfway between Hilo and Kona, we had easy access to either side of the island and SUPER easy access to our favorite beach: Punulu'u. Our host was wonderful and we had very easy and open communication with her. The house was awesome and fit our family of 5 plus my husband's mom and my parents. We would definitely stay here again without hesitation and will definitely be encouraging our friends and family to stay here as well!!

A true Hawaiian gem!
This place has so many amenities that made our vacation a delight. We were made to feel very welcome by our gracious host who answered all our questions. The house is delightfully decorated and has plenty of seating inside and outside. We loved the view and being able to see whales, waves and fishing boats from our deck chairs! This is a great place for a family vacation!!

Lovely Get Away
There were 4 of us. My husband and 2 of our 20 somethings. Everyone had plenty of space to themselves for work, fun and relaxation. The house was very accommodating. The deck is everything! For gathering, for eating and for viewing the ocean. The drive in and out of the neighborhood is something to be aware of, and driving was a big part of getting to see the island and all it has to offer. Everyone forgave the driving since it was so nice to be back at the house!

Family Christmas
The house is beautiful and wonderfully stocked with everything you may need. Cheryl was a great host. However we ended up having to leave early as we could not handle the drive in and out with 99 turns just on the road down and over 300 to go to Kona! Great place if you don’t want to do anything but relax!

Milolii road is like Lombard street in San Francisco I agree but it has one of the best views on the island and its what keeps the last hawaiian fishing village special. I do agree there are a lot of turns. I counted 66 but the view is phenomenal. The county road is paved, and curvy as stated in my description. Thanks for renting the house so sorry I didn't know your grandkids got carsick. I did give you that very lovely discount though. Anyways my best to you and yours! Many people have used my house as a starting spot because it is only an hour and a half or less to volcano national park.

Perfect location for star gazing
We enjoyed our stay very much! Perfect way to spend a week away from reality of everyday life. Highly recommend. As others mentioned, be careful on the winding road.

Ocean sounds
We used the house as a home base to explore the island on many excursions. The highlight was watching/hearing the ocean and waves from the deck while eating breakfast each day, then soaking up the ocean sounds at night under the stars. Very comfortable accommodations with superb house host who is informative and friendly with a love for Hawaii.

The description of property was spot on! It is exactly an hour and half south of Kona and is in a very quiet neighborhood. The house is well equipped for staying staying there. We found the nearby swimming hole and ventured in for a quick swim. There is plenty of beach equipment and we used the snorkels.

Perfect family getaway
The Makai Hideaway is a gem. It is well-equipped and worked well for our family (three generations). There are a numerous personal touches, and Cheryl is a very conscientious and responsive host. She has left guidebooks, information and even her own top 10 list. There is a lot to see and do on the island, so we did a lot of day trips. Everyone appreciated the large lanai, especially in the morning and at sunset. We often had gecko guests (very cute). The kids (teenagers) loved having their own space and their own beds on the lower level, especially after staying in more crowded accommodations earlier in the trip. Do make sure you read the listing carefully as the access to the lower is external- Cheryl is very open about this and it was fine for us but it would not work for everyone. The “swimming hole” nearby proved to be an excellent spot for snorkeling- on par with many more well-known places- though we could only go toward to end of our stay as the waves were too rough initially. Worth a special mention: We bought mac nuts in their shells from a stand on the road down to the house, and everyone loved cracking and eating these.

Relaxing in Kona
Any and everything one might forget to pack was available and immaculately stored. The beds were comfortable and we slept better than at home especially with the sounds of the sea hitting the rocks. We absolutely loved our stay and hope to go back!! It was especially relaxing after a grueling year of cancer treatments for Marianne. There is nothing you could do to make the stay more relaxing. Thanks for letting us use your beach chairs, etc.♥️

Family Vacation
LOVED the house. We had a large party of eight and it was nice having separated upper and lower floor living quarters that accommodated everyone. There was a Pac 'n' Play and high chair which was great as we had an infant. There is a shed with every type of swim/sand/beach equipment imaginable. Cheryl was very easy to get ahold of and kept me updated with notifications to make the check-in/check-out process smooth. Very short walk to the beach. Unfortunately the waves were too high during our stay to go into the water. Only downfall was the drive down to the house. The switchback road leading the last 3 miles was not something we were used to and was nerve racking for us, particularly when it was dark or raining out. Otherwise, no complaints and highly recommend!

Glad you had a great trip! And loved the house, Milolii road the one like Lombard street is what makes Milolii special. There is the most phenomenal ocean view off that road and that is why I put it in my description .Thank you for taking such good care of my house and being water conservative. I really appreciate. My cleaners said it was like no one had been there but 8 people were!

Island Paradise
My family had an incredibly fun time staying in this house for a week. The house is clean and tidy, with island decor. Cheryl is a wonderful communicator with great activity suggestions and recommendations. We enjoyed the private snorkeling spot, and used it almost every morning. We like to be removed from the hustle of the heavy tourist population when traveling, and this house is perfect for that.

Gorgeous Views
Cheryl's home is probably one of the most well stocked homes we have ever been in. It is very comfortable and our party loved grilling out on the deck and star gazing. The area is very dark and quiet. There is a bit of a twisty drive to get to the house, but being from Colorado, it really wasn't an issue for us. The house is located about hour away from everything, so each day we did have a pretty good trek into either Kona or down the other side to the volcanos and Hilo. Cheryl took plenty of time to give us suggestions as well as details about our stay. We hit the Costco after the airport and had plenty of things to cook or snack on if we didn't feel like looking for a place to eat. The only downside for our family was the layout of the house. We had two couples with two kids each. We intended for each couple to take one of the queen or king rooms and the kids to all stay together in the the 2 queen/ bunk bed room. However the only way to access the lower level is the outside stair case, its pretty separate. Also without air conditioning you have to leave the sliding doors open, and the screen doors do not lock, so the house is completely open all night or super warm. Even though our kiddos are a bit older ranging from 10-14 this made me a bit nervous. Which is more my personality than anything to do with the house. Cheryl was quick to offer me more sleeping options to keep the kids in the upper level with us, but in the end the dads traded off sleeping downstairs with the kiddos. The kids loved the area and thoroughly enjoyed the game room and lower patio. At no time did the area feel unsafe nor did anyone ever disturb us. I just happen to be a more nervous traveler than most when it comes to the kids. We had a wonderful stay and appreciated Cheryl's hospitality. The whole area is just beautiful.

Wonderful house and location
This trip included my sister, my husband and myself and I am so happy I chose this house for our vacation. The house is exactly how the pictures look and is in a quiet relaxing area. Amazing place !
What a gem this place is, off the Beaten path but so worth it! Everything you need and more at this beautiful-hideaway! The place is spacious and so relaxing! Cheryl also thought of everything she was so accommodating for us and even had champagne set up for us when I mentioned we were renewing our vows for 35th anniversary. Well it may be an hour from the airport there’s so much to do around this place there’s a beautiful hidden beach so close to this place. We Definitely plan on coming back again so we can explore more in this area. I can’t say enough about this place and how helpful Cheryl was ! Mahalo

Our family of 5 stayed here for 5 days. This property was very clean and decorated in a super charming way. Cheryl was helpful with her knowledge of the area and the home was stocked with many different supplies that we used including beach chairs, boogie boards and beach umbrellas. Stephen shared the most incredible white pineapple with us and their personal touch was really nice. We loved the large deck and the sound of the ocean. The road to the property is not for the faint of heart, but we found it added to our adventure.

Amazing!
This was one of the best appointed rentals that we have ever stayed in! It was perfect and exactly what we were looking for. It is a little off the beaten path, which makes it charming, relaxing and the perfect distance from all the best places to see on the big island! You are only an hourish from Volcano’s national park, about 30 minutes from the southern most point in the US, 5 min drive with about 15-20 min hike from one of the most beautiful (and quiet) black sand beaches. You are in the midst of coffee country and great coffee at every turn (don’t miss Miranda’s!). Makai Hideaway has everything, very well appointed as I mentioned you only need to bring food, the owner has thought of everything! There is literally nothing that we needed that wasn’t provided. We travelled with our daughter and her friend (they are 18) and they had a separate place on the lower level that was perfect for them. We had a fabulous time and the views were nothing short of outstanding, mountain to ocean and breathtaking sunsets. We loved everything about our stay!

Great place for family reunion or big group gathering
Perfect for family reunion or big group gatherings. Enough room for everyone to enjoy, indoor and outdoor, upstairs and downstairs. Well stocked house with all you need for the beach fun to family fun to a quiet reading corner to enjoy some private moment. Due to the current COVID situation, I picked a house away from tourist crowded areas (super cautious), it turned out to be a nice surprise with the most amazing black sand beach nearby, the fresh fruit stands filled with the most yummy papaya/avocado etc...I had ever had on the way, convenient to the best snorkeling beach.....and the amazing host Cheryl and property manager Steven！We had a pleasant stay and will definitely recommend the place!

Outstanding Property and Host,
If we could give Cheryl 10 stars, we would in a heartbeat! She greeted us with fresh fruit ( and continued to provide it throughout the week!), wine, and other island specialties. The house was spotless and had every possible amenity - more appliances than my kitchen at home, kayaks, grill, ceiling fans, etc. She provided us with countless recommendations as well (beaches, tours, restaurants). Although the house didn’t require any handyman work, we knew Steve was only a phone call away! Location was within reasonable driving distance to the entire island. Overall, a great stay at a great house with an awesome host!

Peaceful stay in a wonderful location!
We absolutely loved the house and the peaceful location. Charyl was very responsive and accomodating. We loved being able to walk down to the water for a quick snorkel, swim or kayak. Thank you for your great review! If you have big plans you just leave early. The big island involves a lot of driving as it takes 6 hours to drive around. I always tell people I am a good hour south of Kona.

Great place for family get together
We had a few small issues while we were here but the owner took care of them right away and made things right. The sunsets are beautiful and even tho it rained it was nice to cool it down a bit. We were here for 11 days and 7 of those days we had 4 of our grandkids and 2 daughters with us. It was a great time. The full moon so beautiful we woke up early one morning and it was breathtaking. We would definitely come back

Best Hawaii Home Ever!
We loved our stay at Cheryl's beautiful Hawaiian home in Miloii! Unbelievable view of the Pacific and so quite! Neighbor Daniel got us all squared away with a history of the village and with great suggestions for our stay and made us feel at home and relaxed. This home is fabulously equipped ensuring a very comfortable stay. Snorkeling is great either in Miloii or nearby down the coast off highway 11 about 20 minutes away - Kona is close and great whale watching just north of Kona - Saw many! The communication from Cheryl was great - She is conscientious and quick to respond. We highly recommend this home in Paradise for any and all occasions - for young and old.

More than expected !!
We arrived after dark, this made for an interesting drive down to the house. The road is fairly steep, w/switchbacks. We took our time and it was no problem. Later driving during the day it always offered a view that was interesting and wonderful. On arrival we found the home to be everything we could want and more. Where hotel amenities were not promised, they were there. We loved our time sitting on the Lani or in the living room overlooking the ocean. We had fantastic views of the surf splashing against the shore. We spent many hours at home enjoying card games and reading on the Lani. Two days before we were to leave we were entranced by a phenominon we had never seen before. From the Lani facing the ocean we saw the end of a rainbow, it appeared to end about 40yds from us. Then we turned toward the hill side, on the Lani by the kitchen and saw the other end of the rainbow, about 80yards away.Unfortunately I did not find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. All in all we had a wonderful time, we were comfortable at all times. We received more than we bargained for, a pleasant surprise in today's world.

Quiet and peaceful.
We had a great time and had the chance to explore parts of the island we haven’t been to before. The house was clean and well kept. The views were amazing and the swimming area out in front of the house was great. Easy access into the water which was clear and full of fish to see. Overall a great time and would recommend this to all who want to really relax and see this part of the island.

Great place. Beautiful spot.
The house is well equipped with lots of room. Great lanai for watching the beautiful sunsets at Milolii. Cheryl is very accommodating.

Great Home away from Home
Loved our stay. The house was very well equipped, it really had everything, from leftover spices, lots of kitchen utensils, beach gear and toys for all sizes. It was such a cozy and comfortable home to stay in. We felt welcomed with all the attention from Cheryl and Daniel. Daniel was so helpful and friendly, he gave us the 411 on the island. I’d love to come back and stay here again soon. Mahalo!!!

A great home base during our stay on Big Island Feb 2018
Upon arrival (very late at night ) the house was open, lights o and ready for our weary bodies to crash after 24+ hours of traveling from Ontario Canada with 2 layovers! We met Daniel in the morning with our welcome greeting and he gave us some great added info, including the recommendation of visiting The Place of Refuge which we did the following day and thoroughy enjoyed. Cheryl's home is well appointed, kitchen is well equipped, lots of towels...helpful additions like ice packs and boogie boards and beach chairs were also helpful items we made use of every day. It was just y daughter during our visit so we mainly used the top floor of the home, enjoyed coffee and breakfast on the upper deck almost every morning and enjoyed the sounds of the waves through every window when we finally went to bed each night. We visited Big Island last year and stayed over on Hilo side of island, this time we wanted something closer to Kona side. I chose this home due to the available beach items, (boogie boards, beach chairs, and kayaks) we brought our snorkel and scuba gear. We were about a 40-60 minute drive to manyof the activities we planned near Ali'i drive drive and north Kona. We were about an 60-70 min drive to airportand about 90 minutes to Hapuna Beach. Additionally we did try again to visit the Visitors Centre on Mauna Loa this year for star gazing(about 2 hours from saddle road to the house) but unfortunately stars were not clear that night. We love visiting Carl Smith Beach (Hilo area) and highly recommend the trip over to Hilo to enjoy a visit to that area and swim with turtles. A nice mid-way stop along the way is the bakery---dont miss their donuts! From the house its about 70-90 minutes to Volcanoes National park to walk through the Thurston Lava Tube, and while there this year we checked out the Petroglyphs....also highly recommend. We also stopped at the bakery that day as well again...since its a half way mark towards the Volcanoes park Entrance :) Cheryl was excellent to deal with and respond quickly to questions leading up to our arrival. She checked in with us via email when we arrived and the welcome package has all needed contact info. Lots of towels so was nice not having to pack those. Beds are soft (only minor draw back) The house is located in Miloli'i Beach area. Getting to the beach area is only a few minutes by car buy the small bay if rocky and rough. Overall - highly recommend booking this house we had great stay! Kim & Morgan

Thank you for your lovely review and again thank you for leaving the house so clean. The king bed in the master is only three years old and has a padded top but it is a Certa high quality mattress and the other mattress is a three years mattress. You guys must like your mattresses super firm.

Great house, quiet retreat
The house was amazing. Huge, great view, lots of comfortable beds. The addition of the ping pong table was fun! Didn't get to check out the kayaks, unfortunately, our stay was only three nights. Daniel was wonderful. Made some great recommendations of places to visit, including a nearby secluded beach which was beautiful. Highly recommend this property. Cheryl was excellent to deal with. Quick to respond. Hope to return someday!

Wonderful getaway!
The house was great. All amenities, including a gorgeous view of the ocean, with the hope of seeing whales calving in the bay. Daniel, the manager provided very used info about must do activities. He really helped to make the stay special. Be prepared for the long and winding road that gets you from the main highway to the community in which the house is located. We recommend it very highly! I love the drive down the road as I think one of the better views of the island is on it. The big Island involves a lot of driving and the12 minute road to get to the house from highway 11 is paved.

An absolutely wonderful home and great value that is a tad far from most cities and activities.
This was a wonderful house for a Hawaii getaway. The area is not exactly what you'd expect for Hawaiian scenery--it is in a community built on lava rocks--but it is relaxing nonetheless. The house has several high-quality kayaks that are free to use, and is very close to a very scenic cove where is excellent to use them. We spent a full day kayaking to a nearby beach, where we used sand toys that were also provided in the house. The only downside for the house is the location: it is quite a ways south of Captain Cook, and the last few miles are down an exceptionally windy road. If you plan to travel in to Captain Cook or Kona every day, then the drive might get a bit tiresome. But you won't find a house that has nearly as good a deal as this anywhere near the cities, so you get what you pay for. For us, the opportunity to rent such a wonderful and large home for such a great rate more than made up for the commute.

Great house close to South Point
Loved the sunset from the large deck. We loved all the space to spread the family out. The lower level has a private suite perfect for a couple who doesn't want to be bothered while the rest of the family is there. The snorkeling down the road about five minutes is the best on the island. Thanks Cheryl for sharing your lovely home with us.

Sleeps large groups off the beaten path
This location is remote - it is 1.5 hours south of the Kona airport, one hour from Volcanoes National Park and 30 minutes to the nearest market. If you are looking for a resort town with all the amenities, night life and tourism, this may not be your rental. But the allure of this one is in the loss of those things - this house has quiet, beautiful views and space for you and yours. The owner lives elsewhere and the caretaker lives just up the street - he is a positive character and full of stories of the area and what being in Miloli'i is like (this rental is not in Captain Cook proper, but a small fishing village further south). Be expected to hand him $20 when you get there, it is a deal that the two have about the house being rented out that the owner messaged out before heading there. We slept 11 in the house easily during our visit - Second floor: Master bedroom with a king bed, spare bedroom with a full bed, pull out couch with another full sized bed. Full kitchen, bar dining. Massive porch with ocean views. (There are no internal stairs between floors, all traffic goes outside to the patio stairs) Ground floor: Game room has a full size bed and twin-sized bunk beds. Bedroom with a full size bed and an air mattress. There are also all the ocean swimming gear you may want to use, all in different levels of quality. There is a snorkel spot nearby that is good to jump into, and a public beach that is a 10 minute drive and 15 minute walk that is beyond worth spending some time at since the location is so isolated.

Thank you for your review! I love the peace and remoteness of the house. This is where the real Hawaiians build their second homes. Many people from Kona have built here. Also, many main landers. It is a hideaway one hour ten minutes south of Kona airport- you must have had horrible traffic- and one hour 20 minutes to volcano. It was a pleasure renting to your group. I appreciate you taking care of our retirement home! Daniel said you were a great group! Come again!

Excellence in Paradise!
This home has it all! Beautiful sunsets, quiet and peaceful neighborhood off the beaten path, amenities readily available for beach activities, magnificent area for snorkeling or sea kayaking just a short walk from home, satellite TV, movies, a small library of books, air hockey, ping pong and board games for the kids. Professional, courteous and thorough rental process before, during and after our rental. We would definitely rent this beautiful home again and highly recommend it!
