La Cure de Rièzes, Chimay, newly renovated vacation home for 12 with a sauna

For more than 10 years, Ellen and Anthony have been in love with Chimay and the surrounding area. If only because here you can still walk for hours—even days—through endless forests without encountering a single soul. So it was written in the stars that one fine day, the couple would stumble upon a gem that would further strengthen their bond with the region. Right next to the church in quiet Rièzes, the historic rectory had, in fact, been standing empty for years. The neighborhood children enthusiastically took over the garden, while the building itself—built in 1860—was falling into disrepair.

And so the couple took the plunge, rolled up their sleeves for two years, and transformed the humble rectory into La Cure De Rièzes. Anthony tore down what couldn’t be saved, transforming the wasteland back into a garden, while Ellen took charge of the interior design. In this way, this historic place regained every possible modern comfort—and its soul. Thanks to carefully selected items—from a wood-burning stove and a sauna overlooking the garden to an antique mirror, nature prints, and blissfully thick throws—it feels as though time has stood still. And when you look outside, you really have to pinch yourself. Because the old schoolhouse, the cemetery, and the church complete this picture-perfect heritage scene.

Rièzes is the ideal base from which to explore the impressive Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse National Park. From the rectory, you can stroll right into a landscape that unites the rugged beauty of the Fagne and the Calestienne. The region invites you to embark on endless explorations through vast deciduous forests and along babbling streams. Had enough of walking?
