El Médano, formerly Puerto de Granadilla, is a tourist area in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona in the south of the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). It is 11 kilometres from the town centre of Granadilla de Abona, reaching a maximum altitude of 10 metres above sea level. It has the largest natural beach in Tenerife[citation needed] with a length of about 2 kilometres (Playa de la Tejita) and many small beaches or coves dotted along the coast. The coast of El Médano is frequently windswept, which makes it an area for windsurfing, kitesurfing and even kite flying. Every year competitions are held in these and other sporting disciplines, some of them at international level, valid for national championships, world championships, etc. The beach, which has been awarded the "Blue Flag" distinction since 2005, has changing rooms and showers, as well as bars, restaurants and accommodation in the surrounding area.
