Make the winning move this year when you vacation in CheckMate. This 6-bedroom home with 5 full bathrooms is located just 2 lots from the Ocean on a quiet cul-de-sac in Southern Shores and offers outstanding ocean views! [Note: No dogs or other animals are allowed in this home.]

TOP LEVEL:
Spacious Great Room featuring a well‑equipped kitchen with two dishwashers, an island with seating for three, and a large dining table accommodating twelve guests. The comfortable living area offers a flat‑screen TV and opens to a deck with sweeping ocean views. There are 2 Queen Master Suites: one has a private Master Bath and the other Queen Jr. Master Suite has a semi-private bath which can be shared on this level. [Note: gas fireplace is not available for guest use.]

ENTRY LEVEL:
Spend pleasant nights sleeping to the sound of crashing waves from one of three King bedrooms (two of which are Master Suites), and the sixth bedroom has a Double and Twin bed. All the bedrooms have flat-screen TVs. The den offers another area to relax and watch a movie or test your skill against the old-fashioned arcade game.

GROUND LEVEL:
The outside area of this home is designed for pure enjoyment by the entire family! Everyone will enjoy spending time in the large private pool that measures 18' x 30' (pool open May to mid-October; pool heat is available for an additional fee). There's also a hot tub for the adults to enjoy. Spend time sitting poolside while meals are prepared on the gas grill. There is parking for 4-5 vehicles in the driveway.

CheckMate also offers membership to the Southern Shores Civic Association which features access to the Hillcrest parking lot, community tennis/pickleball courts, parks, and soundside water access.

  • One of the northernmost towns along the coast in North Carolina, Duck is an idyllic town on the shores of the Currituck Sound. This shot was taken from the town's boardwalk while looking West over the sounds. It is advisable to visit the location in Winter as that is off season - so you can spend more time taking in the beauty of the North Carolina coastline and also sunsets are usually much more picturesque around the time owing to the cooler temperatures and lower amount of atmospheric haze. Plenty of things around Duck to see. Further north, there is the Currituck Lighthouse where you can climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse. North of Corolla, there is an area where you can drive along the coast on the sand - 4X4s a must. Here you can spot some Spanish Mustangs, horses out in the wild. If you're lucky, you can spot them running along the beach in the surf. I'd recommend taking a tour through the Corolla Wild Horse Fund - the money from the tours is used to help the wild horses in every which way possible and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Location of home is perfect! Some issues with housekeeping and minor maintenence issues, but property management was responsive immediately. Loved the pool and distance from the beach. Plenty of room for our family.

Great House with very minor issues

The location and size of this house is what makes it worth it. Plenty of bedrooms and space in the living room area. We enjoyed the arcade machine and other gaming systems very much as they added a nice touch of something to do if you got "bored". The pool and jacuzzi were clean and enjoyable to use. There is also plenty of parking space available for multiple vehicles. There are a few minor issues with the house but nothing that would deter me from booking this house again. The mattresses are very uncomfortable and need to be replaced ASAP. There are dips and humps in them from being used over the years. There was also spots of mold on the shower curtains throughout the house. Very easy to fix so I would hope the property managers will replace those. And the set of stairs leading up to the house from the pool are leaning to one side very badly. This creates a lot of potential for someone falling and getting hurt. Again these things would not prevent me from booking again in the future because we enjoyed our stay very much. The location is perfect and the views of the ocean from the upper decks are unmatched.

Fabulous Family Beach House

This house is wonderful. Pool was spectacular. We heated it, and that was a good decision since we had our small grandchildren. There is a second fridge near the pool along with beach and pool items that are not advertised. Close walk to beach. You could see the ocean and hear the waves from multiple places on the decks.

Great house, just a few minor issues.

The property itself was very well maintained, clean, and even nicer than the pictures looked. Distance to the beach was great, easily done by toddlers and adults taking beach supplies done. The grill was disgusting when we got there and almost exploded from the grease piled up, had to turn it off and clean the racks and underside of the burners for a half hour before even trying to cook food on it. The heated pool felt heated only about half days we were there, the other days it was just as cold as a non heated pool some other family stayed at. The host was super responsive and sent someone to check the pool, but there was no difference the next day. The smart tv had issues connecting to the internet so we couldnt use most of the streaming apps, but we just used Apple play screen sharing from phones to make it work. Other than those relatively minor issues, the house was fantastic and we would consider staying there again.

Nice stay but a few surprises

The house was nice and large enough for us all to be comfortable. Overall we enjoyed our stay but VRBO did not show on their listing that the heated pool was an extra feature that would cost us additional money ($500). We also did not realize that we would have to provide essential items like toilet paper, soap, towels (if you want more than 1 towel) etc. we found this all out from the property management company (different company) after we arrived so we had to buy more items we weren’t expecting. We also had spotty wi-fi, there are no screens in the windows so if you open one all the bugs come in, and the lawn care service came at 7am to cut the grass one morning waking everyone up. That aside, our biggest issue is that we felt that VRBO did not fully inform us of what was/wasn’t included in the rental and since this was our first time to OBX we did not know what to expect.

A Visit to Checkmate

The house is beautifully decorated yet warm and comfortable for a family vacation. It is convenient to beach with outdoor shower which helps keep house and pool clean. Having a pool and hot tub provided a variety of entertainment for the kids and adults alike. We had a great time.

Best vacation location so far!

We had an amazing stay at this location the 4th of July week. The property is perfectly located about 200 yards from the beach. Also a short drive to Duck, NC which is such a cute town with plenty to do. We stayed with three families (with kids), and still had an extra room! In fact, all adults had a king size bed and their own bathroom. The private pool made it PERFECT for small families. I find it difficult to spend more than 3-4 hours at a time with young kids at the beach, so having the pool for mornings or late afternoons was amazing. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat. The only negative, especially for people taking flights, is the towels, toilet paper, and essentials were a bit limited. I think they can go a bit further than a courtesy role of two of paper towels and toilet paper. Also, adding some beach towels to the closet would be appreciated. Thankfully, we were able to rent beach chairs and towels, so we figured it out. Thanks for a great trip with many memories!

Excellent escape

We had a great stay at Checkmate. The location is excellent - it is easy to get to when you arrive in the OBX but is nestled in a residential neighborhood. It is a short walk to the beach, the beach is not busy since it isn't public access, and you can see the beach from the house. The house itself is also great, and we would happily stay here again.

Fantastic Family Get Away

We had a wonderful time at Checkmate. The house was perfect for simple and quality fun. We spent so much time at the pool, which was perfect and the walk to the beech was closer than we expected. In addition, the beech was at times almost like having a private beach to ourselves. The house itself is great for groups who want to hang out but also people who want to get away for some alone time. The PacMan game was a fun bonus. Two notes - 1) the playground which was in the pictures is not there and 2) if you are big grillers - the grill is not that big so it can be a challenge for larger groups. As you can tell our two notes are very minor and we are already hoping that we can stay at Checkmate again!

Great family vacation. Perfect location!

We had a great time here on our family vacation! We couldn't have had a better location in terms of proximity to beach and things to do. We absolutely loved the pool and the yard space for my children to run around in. We were secluded enough to where we totally forgot that there was a pandemic happening in the world which is exactly what we needed. To get away from the stressors of our everyday life. We were disappointed that the listing showed a playground that is no longer on the property which is why I took off 1 star. There were also minor dings to the property, pool lining coming off in one corner and fridge handle wiggly, but all were addressed by management very quickly. Since we stayed at the very end of the summer season these issues do not shock me and would not deter me from staying another time. Definitely recommend staying here! We will be booking this location for our next family vacation at OBX!

Checkmate

We narrowed our search down to several houses in the same location that included a pool and a short walk to the beach. Our decision to rent Checkmate was the "private playground" that is shown in the listing. This was a great feature for our small grandchildren. To our surprise when we arrived, the playground was not there even though it is shown in the listing today, 3 weeks after our stay. Our first call to Paramount was a simple reply, "Maybe we need to adjust the listing". Another rep told us that the structure was removed and was to be replaced. A simple phone call to us would have made a world of difference and prepared us and the grandchildren that the playground was not there. Other than that disappointment, the house was nice and well stocked with the needed supplies for a beach vacation. I am disappointed in Paramount and there nonchalant attitude regarding this matter.

CheckMate was perfect!

We enjoyed a fantastic week. The number of sleep rooms and bathrooms was perfect for our large family gathering. We made particularly extensive use of the pool and appreciated it being heated. The kitchen was reasonably well-stocked. The washing machine broke down during our week, but the property manager responded quickly. Although he was unable to get a new machine or repairs done while we were still there, he made arrangements to provide a pickup / dropoff laundry service.

Very enjoyable stay

We had a large group and had a perfect stay. It is even closer to the beach than the pics and the house had all the amenities for kitchen, etc. A few outdoor and beach supplies and I’d give it five stars. Would be great to have a beach umbrella, bikes, beach cart, yard games. We’ll be back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at CheckMate. Highlights: clean; easy, close beach access; large, clean pool; outdoor shower; open, light, airy living space with great views and lovely deck; a full bathroom per bedroom except one (that one shared with another - worked well for kids and parents); large dining table with 12+ chairs; TWO dishwashers; TWO refrigerators; good kitchen lay-out for multiple cooks; easy floor to sweep up sand and crumbs; and, TV/VCR per bedroom and in living room. Cons: end of season wear and tear visible (e.g. skimpy, stained (but clean) bath towels; moldy shower liner in at least 1 bathroom; pool liner pulling away in 2 small places); only 1 cutting board in kitchen; and, when reported in evening that toilet ran VERY slowly, plumber didn't arrive until next morning. In summary, we would happily rent here again.

Life at Checkmate...

Everyone loved the large, comfortable, well equipped house. Outside was great too...big pool/hot tub and large area to play games. But,the short walk to the beach, proved to be the icing on the cake! Yes,we had a few calls for service,however the instant response was extremely welcomed. The family voted, and the result was unanimous to come back next year!!! Thanks, Joe Russo

Best of all worlds

Our family group of eight loved this house--spacious, with generously sized pool. Wonderful open floor plan for the living, dining, kitchen area on the top floor, and plenty of balcony seating with ocean views. Very responsive rental agency. The location is excellent, close to the walkway to the beach. The house is well equipped with beach chairs and toys, an extra fridge and outdoor shower. Plenty of TVs, and an extra living room on the lower floor. The kids enjoyed the Pac Man arcade game and the Wii, and we all enjoyed the many board games, puzzles, and beach books. The kitchen is well equipped, too!

Great house and was as depicted online

We had a wonderful time at Checkmate. The house was clean, bright and had a well stocked kitchen for large family style dinners. The pool and hot tub were clean. The kids enjoyed tossing a football in the yard and the two minute walk to the beach was perfect for all us! Thank you!
