Finally made it, after a long walk, to the Freshwater lake in Dominica! A further one hour walk to go all around the lake, immersed in nature (on a very slippery path). One of the beauties of Nature Island
A great place for an afternoon dip, especially if you've been hiking for a while. It takes about an hour to hike here if you park at the public trailhead. The water is cold, and pool is deep, so be careful. And even if you're not in the mood for a swim, there is a nice deck overlooking the waterfall where you can relax.
The entrance to this narrow rainforest slot canyon is dark and the water is cold, but it's well worth the adventure to swim on in and check out the waterfall at the back. The canyon is about 100ft (33m) long and ends where a small waterfall rushes in. The water is too deep for standing, and the current is pushing you out, so you'll be swimming upstream on the way in. You can rest on a rock ledge once you get to the falls. Don't forget to look up - ferns, vines and other leafy plants cascade into the canyon from far above. For you movie buffs, a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was filmed here. It happens around the 40 minute mark, after the pirates fall into a gorge while being chased by natives. Just a few minutes walk from the trailhead you'll find this awesome tree that has created a set of natural steps along the trail. Easy to twist an ankle though, so be careful - it's still another hour's hike to Middleham Falls. #treetrove
This 300ft (91m) tall waterfall is the tallest in Dominca and can be found after a pleasant one hour rainforest hike. This is the view from the large deck overlooking the falls - to take a dip in the pool you'll need to scramble down some boulders. The water is cold enough to take your breath away, but refreshing on a warm afternoon. The pool is about 20ft (6m) deep, so be prepared to swim or tread water.
