We had the great pleasure of staying at Windermere House this July. Originally built in 1870 and rebuilt after a 1996 fire, the resort blends historic charm with modern comfort. It’s like stepping into the past, without sacrificing modern amenities. Sitting on the front lawn, it’s easy to imagine the guests who’ve stayed here over the last 150+ years.
Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and modern, though a second sink and a stronger shower stream would’ve been nice. Still, everything functioned well. Rooms are cleaned daily.
We enjoyed outstanding meals at both Russo (the main restaurant) and the more casual Windermere Pub downstairs. Both offer outdoor seating and excellent service. The lobby bar is also a great spot for drinks or snacks, designed to match the hotel's classic look with updated touches.
The breakfast buffet was excellent: fruit, smoked salmon, eggs, sausage, French toast, seasoned breakfast potatoes, and more. Staff were consistently friendly and helpful.
The pool area was a highlight, with plenty of loungers, Muskoka chairs, and shade. We didn’t try the barrel saunas, but they looked inviting. We also enjoyed canoeing, tennis and pickleball all included at no extra cost. Kayaks and paddleboards are also offered.
Our favourite spot was the veranda, perfect for relaxing with a book and taking in the stunning lake view.
It’s a premium-priced resort, but worth every penny. We look forward to returning.
