## Emplacement
The citadel of Porto Vecchio was born in 1539, at the instigation of the senators from Gène. The region is then known for being a haven for pirates. From 1540 to 1589, the citadel was destroyed three times and rebuilt. The Republic of Genoa finally ceded the island to France in 1768.
The marina and commercial port below the ramparts is particularly popular in high season. You will find bars, ice cream parlors and restaurants, and you can take nice walks there.
