South Road Paradise
Lorna and her family are beautiful people. The Gemstones Property is high on a hill overlooking the most beautiful beach (Cross Bay) During our stay we basically had the beach to ourselves. The walk to beach from Gemstones is fairly steep but there are two other routes. It’s not an issue to sway a decision to stay here. We stayed 10 days and our taxi driver Belinda who is a beautiful person stopped in route to gemstone from airport at supermarket so we could buy food, beer and wine etc. We prepared dinner three nights on excellent Weber gas grill and enjoyed our meal on the deck overlooking the water. Just spectacular. The location is an easy walk to King Henry the 8ths restaurant and store (their chicken legs, fish cakes and fish chowder are a must). Also the Reefs is just a 15 min walk. We bought 7 day bus pass and traveled the island with ease. I could go on and on but I’ll close by saying that my wife and I have found our Bermuda Home!!

It's the view!!
We loved staying here for everything! The only thing is if you are old you may not stay here for the rock climbing. The beach cannot be accepted by elderly (it gets terrific views!) and going to the bus line is too uphilled.

Jill and Jim, in our younger years somehow we never factor age as an issue. Otherwise, we would have put in the elevator, especially me cause Greg does not beach. It is great to have two other ways to get to our beach. Driving or the 130 steps. If the weather didn't change to cooler we would have been there. Rock climbing is definitely a challenge with US senior citizen in our neighbourhood. (smile) The peace and Tranquility makes up for it. But we get lazy. Understandable. We earned the right to RELAX.

We both was very fortunate. You books within days to your checkin date. Hurricane Lee literally just graced our shores and you arrived to enjoy the best of days which is usually after a tropical system passes. What blew my mind was the perfect heart this hurricane left for you honeymooners. Crossbay Beach will always be know to me has Lover's Cove. 💕

Awesome time
Our favorite place! Second time here. Lorna is absolutely amazing. Love her, love our “deckhouse”, the views are incredible, the short walk to the beach cove and beach is gorgeous . Location is very convenient for the island. Bermuda and it’s people are awesome.

You stayed in July and now September. Why didn't you tell me Hurricane Lee left us a perfectly formed heart on Crossbay Beach on the rocks as you look towards the Fairmont Princess private East Whale Bay Beach. It's amazing. I will email it to you.

Cozy, private beach getaway
Overall our stay was fine, but our arrival orientation was not the best. Although Lorna and Greg were on the premises most of the time we were there, and were very friendly, it took a couple of days and asking some questions to get all the information we needed (how to get hot water in the shower, etc.) We found out there was an information booklet in the nightstand.The unit is clean and modern, but small- basically the bed, one nightstand only, and a dresser and kitchen area. There is really no room for a table or desk. We found a small folding wooden table in the closet and brought in lawn chairs to use when eating indoors. No fresh eggs, fruit or vegetables, but maybe we misunderstood the listing. The private beach is lovely with all sorts of beach equipment available for us to carry down and use there. The first day we carried chairs down the hill, then the second day we were told there were chairs at the beach for our use. The washer and dryer were easily accessible and full sized. Walking to restaurants, a little liquor/grocery store, and the bus stop were all easy to do once up the hilly driveway to the road.

Francine, you were spot on with your review. The Deck House only accommodate 2 people and it is our smallest unit (queen size). The bed is brand new and extremely comfortable, yet the space is much bigger than most hotel rooms, and equipped with the comfort of a home away from home experience. We no longer have chickens producing eggs since our off site farming business has a home for them. Our home gardens are usually down by the end of August with the heat, and the storm systems which we had to prepare for. By the way the hurricanes were intense. The hot water issue in the shower will be ongoing since it is a construction problem which most guests easily figures out when I forget to bring to their attention. There are so many nice feature to this unit that when I tuck myself away in it, with the French doors wide open and that seaview, I know I am in paradise, if not very close. And the price is beyond fair. It was nice to see how often you ventured out and explored our little island of Bermuda.

The most beautiful gem on all of Bermuda
Every part of our stay at Gemstones with Lorna was better than we could have dreamed. The Deck House was extremely clean and well cared for. The bed was new and very very comfortable. The Deck House had everything you would need to make a meal or reheat (pots, pans, kettle, coffee maker, paper towel, microwave). The towels that Lorna provided were incredibly soft. There is not a lot of surface area to place things on around the Deck House, so we set up the two little dinner tables that Lorna had provided as some additional counter space for sunglasses, hats, etc. The view was breathtaking. There are 3 bbqs on site so you never have to worry about not being able to grill up your food. The stove also worked wonderfully, and boiled water very fast. Beach chairs and an umbrella are also provided by Lorna so you’ll have everything you need for the most beautiful beach on the property. Lorna is also a wealth of knowledge about the country and the best sites to see. We had a lot of fun taking the bus around the island. It’s super easy to use and a great way to meet people. If you have difficulty with your mobility, you should be aware that the driveway down to Gemstones is very steep. So if you are walking, it can be a bit of a challenge to get up the driveway. Just keep this in mind. We highly highly recommend staying with Lorna.

DECK HOUSE IS THE BEST!
My older daughter and her friend stayed one week at the Deck House while the rest of the family stayed upstairs at The Gemstones. Both were AMAZING places to stay. The owners made us feel right at home. Everything was clean and in working order. The owners, Greg and Lorna, even accommodated a request for early check in. We arranged transportation with ease with Sylvia, their transportation service, and she and her other drivers (especially Kevin) were always on time and courteous. Our favorite moments included Crossbay Beach which is a mere 2-minute walk from the property. We loved being able to go out there to snorkel, swim, and just enjoy the beautiful views. We snorkeled right off the beach and saw a huge family of 10 parrot fish. We also had a boat charter to snorkel but this beat it by far! We also enjoyed sunsets at the lighthouse and walks/jogs on the Railway Trail, both 10 minutes from the property. This is mostly shaded and if you go west towards Dockyard, you will have AMAZING views of the north shore. We had an amazing day trip to Blue Hole park. We hiked in the preserve, saw amazing caves, swam and jumped off rocks at Blue Hole park, and swam at Walsingham cave (well only 2 of our group of 6 were brave enough to swim in the cave waters). We ended the day with lunch at the Swizzle Inn, just a 5 minute walk up the road. We also jumped off cliffs at Admiralty Park. This is the BEST VRBO we have ever rented. Don't think twice!

Perfect Location
Easy access to numerous beaches including a walk to Horseshoe Bay. Many times we had the beach to ourselves and great views of the Atlantic. We rented a moped as transportation was spotty via taxi as many times they were not available quickly. The bed was comfortable the kitchen had everything needed for us to cook breakfast, and the air-conditioning worked great. Lorna was great and always available if something came up. When we come back to Bermuda we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Still Perfect
For more details, you can search back to my August 3rd, 2019 review, so I will keep this brief. Lorna & Greg are still the best hosts, this is still the best rental ever, and the location is still perfect! My wife and I have wanted to return since our initial stay, and we didn't even consider looking into any other accommodations on the island, which I think says a lot! How can you improve on perfection? Thanks Lorna & Greg. We'll definitely see you again! Oh, and readers should ignore the tip in my previous review about cutting through the Fairmont Southampton as a shortcut to Horseshoe Bay at least until the resort is up and running again. The gate at the end is chained shut for the time being. Makes the walk a bit longer, but it's definitely still worth it.

Terrible Experience
We rented this apartment for 7 nights. It was a terrible experience. The apartment had water leaking into the bathroom and bedroom. When we arrived there was water on the bathroom floor that appeared to come from under the toilet and from through the wall. There were towels that had been placed on the floor to try to stop the water, but they were saturated when we arrived. We wore shoes in the bathroom since we didn't know if the water contained sewage. Also, the internet was not available and the host was not reachable. Finally we got connected to another wifi system. On the third day, the whole bathroom and part of the bedroom flooded. Our suitcases and clothes got soaked. We had to leave. We were able to contact the host's daughter who sent a housekeeper with a wet vac. They told us that they had sucked up all the water and that everything was fine. We came back to look and saw more water was seeping in. We then left, stayed for one night at a different place, and flew back home the next day. We had to arrange new flights which cost $800 for each of us.

I am so sorry your vacation experience was so negatively impacted with the two week torrential rains the entire island of Bermuda had to endure, which was out of our control. I advised you we would not be on island upon your arrival. We have an excellent staff plus our daughter is also in the vacation rental business which you were directed to contact. I am so glad you followed that instructions and I was able to to correspond with her to assist you with the challenges you were experiencing. I tried numerous times daily to contact you. I know how important wifi to my business that us why I have THREE Internet outlets on this property. It took you 4 days to let me know the water issue. By then you decided to move and stay with your daughter. My cleaners addressed your issue immediately . But by then you choose to leave anyway. Who pays $800 per person for airplane ticket changes and only stay 5 days in Bermuda? I am speechless. All I can do is direct you to ALL of our reviews of the Deck House and how our guests feels once they have experience staying here. I know you have expressed getting your money back in full after staying 4 out of 6 days. This is probably the best deal in all of Bermuda for accommodations. WOW!

The attached beach and accompanying view were great. A bit of a steep, but short walk from the property to the beach, like almost any private residence in Bermuda. None of the hustle and bustle of the big resorts, The full kitchen will save hundreds of dollars compared to eating out.

Three days is never enough in Bermuda, yet a nice time out to allow you to wet one's whistle and breathe a bit. So true about our path, she is steep. Planning everyday how to improve it, but it is only a Right-of-way. The longest trip to get here is your 2 hour flight and then you're in PARADISE. Come feel the LOVE. Perfectly pleasant island escape
You cannot beat this hillside Bermuda home! The view is breathtaking. Lorna is an exceptional host! The Deck House is just right for two people. The kitchen had everything we needed. As Lorna says "you don't have to worry about a thing"! Close to bus stops and a few restaurants. Horseshoe Bay was a quick bus ride a few stops down. The beach on location was tranquil and beautiful. I hope upon return visits, I can always book at Gemstones. A++

The situation of Gemstones is beautiful, wonderful views - we saw whales passing by! - and right by the beach. We recommend the Henry VIII restaurant, a very short walk away.

This is a place where you can wake up looking out at the ocean, go to what I consider the most beautiful beach in Bermuda, view the sunset from the deck - all right where you are. The walk to the golf course, restaurants, or lighthouse was fine for an overweight dad in his 50's. Of all the places in the world that I have vacationed, this location is #1. The room ("Deck House") is great because of the view and breeze. Thought it is lacking a table/chairs, the ones on the rooftop and on the patio/lawn are just fine. Hosts are out of this world.

I have spent the whole month of November in that place……absolutely a gorgeous location, very quiet, a permanent sea view from the unit and the beach at walking distance, sunset and very kind hospitality and avaibility from Lorna, the owner! 10-15 minutes away by walk from the famous Horseshoe Beach! A real paradise! Thank you Again Lorna for your kind hospitality! 😊

Hi Rene. Your ears must be ringing cause I just thought of you yesterday. All is well with our family. Trysten's daughter came on Saturday, Dec 10, 2022 @ 8:45pm. She is the most precious little human being. Mother and child doing great. They are a bit far from us but I hope to see her often. For December it has remained lovely. Still in short sleeves and shorts. You would have loved this weather. The Beach is amazing. Like glass today with just one ripple of a wave. The chickens continue to lay eggs and I have tomatoes, onions, spinach, baby bok choy, sweet potatoes and Peppers growing in the gardens. Only one pineapple has fruited and so sweet. I made pineapple rice with it and pork chops. I know you would have loved it. Until next time. Miss you quiet spirit. It was a pleasure having you stay with us for so long. Ya family now. Perfect Location
If you're looking for a beautiful beach, this is it. Gemstones offered one of the best beaches in Bermuda. Location is within walking distance to several restaurants and there are bus stops at the top of the hill. The hostess was very welcoming and was always available to answer questions. This was our fifth trip to Bermuda, and we are hoping to return to Gemstones in the near future.

Don’t hesitate just book it !
We spent four nights at the Deckhouse before moving on to a different parish. Wow just wow we loved it. Lorna, her son and daughter whom we met were all lovely 🥰 her hubby Greg was out working but we got to try his famous pancakes for breakfast. We were very busy during our stay and crammed loads in. We visited the St Gibbs Lighthouse and climbed the 185 steps to the top. Visited Henry VIII restaurant which was a nice meal, went to Coconuts at the Reefs BBQ which was exceptional and we highly recommend. Walked from ours to horseshoe Bay beach and all the other coves in between as far down as Long Warwick Bay tiring but stunning. Hired a twizy and did so much in one day Coopers Island, swizzle inn, baileys ice cream parlour, Crystal caves and tobacco bay snorkelling exceptionally long day ! Loved the Twizy and would recommend but prob best for petite ladies as not much room in the back. Crowning glory was Crossbay Beach and as we visited most of the beaches on the south shore we both thought this was the best. The scenic, solitude of this beach was amazing. We will be back and want to bring our family from the UK and stay in the largest villa Gemstones. Wow can recommend the deckhouse for two as even though it’s a smaller place the bed is super comfy, shower powerful, very clean and superb position. Don’t hesitate ! X

This was a vacation long overdue. So glad you and your family was able to make it to our little magical island miles into the Atlantic after being affected by covid 19. Beautiful view and beach
The property was as described in the listing, and if you took the time to read the reviews you would know there were chickens outside the studio - this was great as we could have our eggs for breakfast in the morning right from the coop! The chickens were no bother at all. The host was very accommodating and her son was very helpful while we were there. The Crossbay Beach just down a path and stairs was beautiful with lots of fish to see snorkelling. It was appreciated that there was snorkeling gear to use. Lovely roof top patio with an umbrella to enjoy the view in the shade. The only thing missing, that we knew about anyway was a couple of chairs in the unit rather than always being on the bed if we were inside. Thank you Lorna for a great stay!

Good morning Lorie. I am so happy you had a good vacation. Glad to hear you enjoyed our free range chickens. They are family now also and does a wonderful job aiding our gardens. The stairs to the beach appears challenging but it is the quickest route especially for the young at heart. But with two other options less than 2 minutes to Crossbay Beach I remain more concern with the safety of the stairs. DO NOT USE in an altered state of conciousness. (smile). Next time I hope we are here to meet you. But Gemstones has so many feathers to enjoy and our level of communication was excellent. Stay safe in these times. UNTIL NEXT TIME 💕

Gemstones is Paradise!
Gemstones is situated on the perfect hilltop location to enjoy incredible views of Crossbay Beach. We stayed in the Deck House which is a well-equipped studio (stove, micorwave, full sized fridge, coffee maker, etc) with a small patio with chairs that overlooked the most beautiful 180 degree views of the water. Lorna, Greg, and their son Tristan are the most gracious hosts and tell you to pick anything you like from their vast herb and vegetable garden right on the property! It is truly a zen garden setting. Very convenient location for walking to Henry VIII restaurant, pantry, Horseshoe Bay Beach, etc. Always grab a few of the pantry's chicken legs and a few drinks to head to the beach! All transportation that Lorna suggested was punctual, friendly, and reliable. We WILL be back.

Perfect In Every Way
My 10-year-old son and I chose Bermuda for April break. If you are considering this property, do yourself a favor and book it asap. I can't imagine our trip with a better place to stay. Between the location, the hospitality, and access to a perfect little beach (snorkeling was great - the resident rainbow parrot fish were about 4 feet and not scared of us), this place made our trip. We stayed in the small unit and became friendly with another group staying in the main house who felt the same way. We spent the last several days in a resort on the south shore (very nice and within viewing distance, actually) and wish we had known to book the entire trip at Gemstones; mostly because it is the definitive vrbo experience - felt like a home and made it easy to enjoy the place we were visiting. My son will remember Gemstones.

Gem On the Hill
Absolutely Bermudiful! Lorna and her family were excellent hosts during our 4 night stay in their Deck House. Steps away from what could easily be a private beach, with public transportation and restaurants in walking distance. Their home is situated halfway between the West & East ends, so no ride commute was ever more than 30 minutes. We decided to rent an electric car from Current Vehicles but there is also Rugged Rentals and another company close to the Grotto Resort. This is the most efficient and affordable option if you like to experience the island they way we did. The Deck House was the perfect size for 2 people, fit with a full kitchen, modern bathroom and plenty of closet space. A flight of stairs on the exterior lead directly to a beautiful patio with spectacular views and comfortable seating. Security was never an issue as it was a private residence with very little passers by. Lorna is friendly, passionate, kind, genuine and can put together a mean fish cake! Her responses were quick, informative and helpful. I plan on bringing my entire family to this paradise and will definitely be renting from Lorna again; I’ll be sure to reserve the main house thi

Business Travel
I stayed in the guest house while the rest of my party stayed in the main house. The property is fantastic! Pictures do not do it justice. Property owners were very patient and responsive to my numerous inquiries. Taxis had a bit of trouble finding the property at first, but we were able to guide them on subsequent trips.

I am so sorry to have missed your visit to Gemstones. I know you have been to Bermuda times before. You would have really enjoyed Chef Greg's private dining but since you already had a chef I hope he found everything he needed to cater to your group during our absent. We keep the kitchen well appointed at all times. As for the taxi delay, should you had called our team you would have had no issues since Mrs. Sylvia Smith has one of the best service teams 😉. We were amazed at the beautiful views and the warmest welcome! This is the perfect location - we spent time in the ocean - took the bus to sightsee - had 2 of the finest restaurants, both with amazing sushi options within walking distance and kind, interesting hosts to talk with, gardens galore and chickens! Our only disappointment was having to leave. We plan to return!❤️

Thank you for choosing the Deckhouse. Kayli and Smokey you were the perfect guests. So considérate. You informed me every step along the way that you were already on island and required an early checkin. This gave us enough advance time to schedule you in since our season was just starting. It worked out perfectly. Your stay was too short. Perfect weather coming in. I was hoping it wouldn't rain since we were still troubleshooting the water issue in this unit in the bath area. I am so glad it appeared that the problem was fixed since it didn't affect you. This was the second time a guests played an instrument for me. So beautiful. Thank you. You are very talented Smokey. You guys left so early upon checkout I regret saying goodbye. I so look forward to your return. I am hoping we are both blessed enough to make that happen. Stay safe. Till next time.

Paradise
From booking to departure, this was a truly remarkable experience. The property was everything we wanted, true to the description and pictures: picturesque beach (that we frequently had to ourselves); perfect rooftop patio with breathtaking views (we enjoyed a dinner in up there, watching the sunset, as well as our daily morning coffee); comfortable, well-appointed room with amenities (the kitchen had everything we needed for making breakfast each day, and you could certainly make other meals as well). Lorna and Greg were gracious, above-and-beyond hosts, offering wonderful suggestions on local restaurants, beaches, and sight-seeing; they even stocked the room with requested groceries prior to our arrival! The island is gorgeous, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the South Shore location of this property is just magical. We would return in a heartbeat. Book it!

The Deck House was great and the Wilson’s are a wonderful couple to visit with and are very helpful. Our first 5 days we rented a scooter to get around. We were allowed to park the scooter right outside of the Deck House. The next 8 days we rented a Terazzi electric car. It was better in the rain than the scooter. Charging the car took some planning as it requires 240 volts. The other smaller electric cars can be charged at the Deck House which 110 volts. The access to Cross Bay is nice and being a private beach is great. Beware of the local people on scooters, they are fearless and reckless in there operation. The Deck House location makes it easy to get around the island. Remember to stay on the left when driving.

Great location, great views, great host! The property fit our needs perfectly. They were beautiful beaches lined up to the left and to the right of where we stayed. Many convenient restaurants and travel was quite easy. The property is extremely well-kept and it was fun meeting other guest coming in from different locations. The property was clean and everything function well. We would definitely Visit again. Thank you Greg and Lorna

The gemstone deck house was a wonderful place for me and my girlfriend to stay while we were in Bermuda. It was a great location and only a few minute walk to horseshoe beach and multiple bus stations that got us around the island. Lorna and her family were a gracious hosts during our stay and we're always willing to help us out if we had any questions. We would stay here again the next we're in Bermuda.

Wonderful hosts, perfect location.
My husband and I had a great stay here for our honeymoon. Waking up to the breathtaking view each morning and getting to know our hosts were definitely highlights of the entire trip.

The Perfect Vacation
We knew “Deck House” would be the perfect spot for our first vacation after the long, stressful year we just had. It was even better than we imagined. Lorna and Greg are gracious hosts, and go out of their way to accommodate their guests. Gemstones at 80 South Rd. is an ideal location to swim, bike and explore beautiful Bermuda.

Beautiful get away to Bermuda.
I loved meeting Lorna and Greg. They were pleasant, informative and so interesting! The upper deck was a great place to eat, drink and see whales migrating North- stunning views. We arrived early in the day due to the necessity of quarantining and not being able to stop on the way. There was clean water leaking through the tile on the bathroom floor for two days. The yard is packed with organic plants and seedlings for sale. Lorna and Greg let us eat some herbs and lettuces. It was great to learn about organic growing. The weather ws perfect and we had a great trip!

Thank you for your review. With the heavy rains prior to your arrival we have had a challenge finding the leak which we hope to address immediately once we are out of our "shelter in place" order. You and our next guest had the perfect opportunity to enjoy Gemstones and Crossbay Beach. With the added benefit of organic veggies and herbs. It was really nice to have the opportunity to enjoy your visit with you. Not to mention daily organic fresh eggs. The girls 🐔 are doing great.

The Island's Hidden Gem
The Gemstones property is one of the best my partner and I have seen in Bermuda. Tucked into the hill, the property has amazing ocean views and direct access to a private beach. Joining the global digital nomad community, my partner and I are working remotely and couldn't have asked for a better "office" location. With more than enough indoor and outdoor space, a fully equipped kitchen, and quick access to the shops by bike, we had everything we needed. It also helps that the hosts Lorna and Greg, who we were fortunate to have around during our stay, are incredibly warm and fun. We're here on the island for 6 months to a year, and staying at Gemstones was the best way to begin our stay.

I can honestly say you and Emily are truly apart of our clan. You guys rolled with us through two back to back hurricanes. You met just about all our family and most of our very close friends. Yet not only rented but really lived with us. Lol. We enjoyed cocktail receptions, non voyage house party, birthday party along with any excuse for a party. You guys are just great people. Thank you for the many memories. As for the bond Bella has with Emily, unbelievable. She has named her chicken and a barbie doll named after Emily. I will miss our many swims and sitting off in the Crab hole. Congrats on your Bermuda driver's license. I am so glad to hope you will be off that bike. Lol
