The Neighborhood:
🌿 Welcome to the Heart of Genoa
We are delighted to welcome you to the heart of Genoa’s historic center, just steps away from San Lorenzo Cathedral and the Old Port.
⚓ Porto Antico
Despite its name, the “Porto Antico” (“Old Port”) is actually one of the most modern areas along Genoa’s waterfront. Completely redeveloped in 1992 for the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus, it showcases the city’s vibrant blend of history and innovation.
🐠 Aquarium of Genoa
The Aquarium of Genoa is the flagship attraction of the Porto Antico — and one of Italy’s most visited sites, with over 1.2 million visitors each year. It offers an immersive experience for all ages, featuring vast tanks and a remarkable diversity of marine life — fascinating even without children!
💡 Allow about 2.5 to 3.5 hours for your visit.
🌴 Biosphere & Bigo (Renzo Piano)
Just 200 meters from the apartment, the Biosphere and Bigo were designed by Genoese architect Renzo Piano, adding a touch of elegant modernity to the Porto Antico.
The Biosphere, a glass sphere floating on the water, shelters a tropical microclimate with palm trees, ferns, vines, butterflies, and birds — a short but immersive visit that combines sensory experience with education about biodiversity.
The Bigo, inspired by old port cranes, features a panoramic elevator offering breathtaking 360° views over the harbor.
🕍San Lorenzo Cathedral
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, is the seat of the Archbishop of Genoa and the city’s main Roman Catholic church. Consecrated in 1118 by Pope Gelasius II, it was built between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Its Romanesque aisles, Gothic façade (early 13th century), and later Renaissance bell tower and dome illustrate the cathedral’s evolution across the centuries.
🏛️ Palazzo Ducale
Located next to the cathedral, the Palazzo Ducale was once the residence of Genoa’s doges and now serves as a museum and cultural center hosting exhibitions and events. The palace has two façades: one on Piazza Matteotti and another on Piazza De Ferrari.
Its earliest structures date back to 1251–1275, during the height of the Republic of Genoa. The complex expanded over time, incorporating Doria and Fieschi family towers — including the Grimaldina Tower, completed in 1539 and also known as the Torre del Popolo.
