Manage your expectations
No matter how many laudative words you attach in front of the name of the hotel - Splendid, Star and Grand give it a very illustrious vibe - it's good to note that this is a 3-star hotel for people who visit the Old Town. It's very steadily exactly that - the pictures do make it look amazing, but be prepared that it's not nearly in as good shape as you might understand at a glance. Our experience was, we booked it for 6 nights, but stayed only for one. The service staff was kind enough, but mind you, I'm a heavy-set guy, it's actually not good customer service to loudly note how big you are, and wonder how much you can eat when you enter. That's actually pretty rude. While I do get some funny looks especially when traveling in S.E. Asia for my height and size, one would expect hotel staff to keep their opinions to themselves. I'm sure it wasn't meant bad, but after 20+ hours of travel in small planes, trains and automobiles, it's not what you want to have to deal with the first thing you check in. The room itself has what it promises, but for example we didn't have hot water (staff did fix it when we complained), and the bed is rather hard and uncomfortable with only one set of pillows. When checking out after one night, the staff didn't try to really offer a refund - they were not entitled to, but vice versa, I'm not entitled to give a nice review.

Not my cup of tee
The hotel and the rooms where dingy. Breakfast was poor and there were cockroaches under the tables on the breakfast room. The safetybox was a joke, worked with a small key which was easy to copy so didn't feel safe. There was a huge crack on our hotel room door and the stairway was nasty. did not feel like a hotel. There were electrict wires hanging on the wall in our room, there were buttoms missing from the light switch. You had to know to put the heater on on the shower or the water heater did not work and you run out of hot water while showering (no one told us that). The towels were dirty. Personel was nice and helpful atleast till we told that we were not happy with the hotel. The room was good sized but I didn't like to even touch anything or stay there any longer than had to. There was electric insecticide in our room but I was still worried, how many roches or other insects there would be in our suitcase. Some may thing that this is good value for money, but I recommend to choose better hotel and stay away from this one.

Good value for money
The modest front disguises a well kept hotel, hidden in a quiet alley of Hanoi old town. Taxis cannot serve the hotel but leave you approx 500 m away on the high street. The location offers a quiet retreat from the otherwise chaotic and noisy traffic of Hanoi. No noise is carried to the rooms. Breakfast is offered from a rich meny, Hotel personel procure well organized but pricy excursions to well known tourist locations.

I enjoy creature comforts while traveling. Many of which this hotel had: "turbo" air conditioner, comfortable beds, clean towels, hot shower, friendly and helpful staff. The lack of an elevator for a 6 level hotel made things a bit dicey for a BIG American Guy like myself. But, let me be clear this "budget hotel" meets expectations. No more, no less. They do a good job and you'll get a good night's rest.

AVOID THIS HOTEL The service provided by Dong and Harry were magnificent BUT the rooms we got were not what was advertised, they were run down, across the road and part of another hotel, no lift and the rooms were in the 6th and 3rd floor with very steep and narrow stairs. Also, we had belongings STOLEN from our room by the hotel staff but nothing was done about this other than waiving airport pickup and drop off fees which weren’t even a quarter the price of the stolen goods. Don’t stay here, your belongings are not safe.

Excellent location. Being very near the cathedral made it easy to find amongst the maze of narrow streets in the old town. The staff were all lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful.

We had a nice stay at Splendid Star. The staff is exceptional and helped a lot with booking an overnight bus to Sa Pa and to the airport. They were able to throughly explain our options for transportation and book the right one for us. Location is convenient to many points of interest and there’s great food/coffee all around. Note, since it’s a narrow street, cars cannot come directly to the hotel, but that was not a problem as the pickup person from any of the excursions / bus came to get us on foot and we walked to the vehicle. Other than that it’s a pretty standard 3/3.5 star hotel.

Hotel located in the French Quarters in Hanoi. Hotel location far away from main road. Narrow alley street. The hotel and room I had booked was not even the same as shown on Expedia. Hotel owners own several hotels all in the same area. Rooms are dirty, old, and not what I had expected from my booking.

This was not a good stay. It was a very small “mini” hotel in the French Quarters. The coffee and breakfast was not good & this is Vietnam where they’re famous for their hot breakfasts. Will NOT stay here again nor will I refer anyone here. Poor customer service all around.

We were disappointed in the room the first night, but then we were upgrade to a larger room with a balcony. The breakfast buffet was delicious. Service was excellent.

Basick hotel down a lane way,church next door and a wake up with bells at 430am every day the water presher is low in shower but staff are good and lockation is convenient. Brecfast is ok. Rooms are basick but ok for a3.5 star. Thank ypu to all the staff as they are grate.

Je déconseille aux personnes frileuse, il a fait très très très froid, pas de chauffage dans la chambre, on me ramène un chauffage d’appoint pour me le reprendre en mon absence le lendemain. Le personnel est sympa, mais l’hôtel n’est pas entretenu.

Nice hotel in good old town location
Although hotel room was adequate for our stay as we weren't in the room that long & didn't require much; the photos on the booking looked a lot different to what we had. Hotel staff were lovely & attentive. Location makes it walking distance to most old town sights.

Dirty hotel
The hotel markets itself as a 4 star hotel but it’s really a 2-3 star hotel. It is so old and dirty. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting and I had to wear shower shoes. The room had a werid smell. The pictures of the hotel does not look like the room at all. NOT EVEN CLOSE. the carpet was old and smelly. They had some stains on the wall. My faucet would leak when I would turn it on. The shower head was broken. I asked for half refund but they wouldn’t allow it. We finally got a new room the next day and it was BARELY BETTER. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL.

Staff were great. Breakfast had a good tasty selection. Went of the recommended Ha Long Bay boat trip which was well worth it. Wifi access intermittent in the room but hey, you don’t go to Vietnam to surf the web. You can do that at home. Overall, for the price, friendliness, location, this place is excellent value for money.

Nice location with very friendly staff. The room was a bit dusty and the church nearby was very noisy due to the bells ringing regularly. It’s a good place to stay for a short visit.

今回はトラブルが多く部屋のブッキングミスがあったり、飲んでもいないドリンクの請求をされたりしてとても残念な箇所が多々ありました。 荷物も重たいのに階段だけで大変でしたが、スタッフの人は愛想もよく優しくて楽しい人達でした。
