NCN 23, near to Merstone, Isle of Wight, Great Britain. Looking north-west towards Newport, this is the former Sandown to Newport railway line now used as a cycle trail. The minor road crossing here still uses the original bridge, whilst the crossing in the distance by the blue horsebox (Merstone Lane) is a former level crossing.

Footpath towards Pagham Just one of the network of footpaths, bridleways and cycle tracks in this square. The bridge leads from the Sandown to Newport cycle track onto a footpath across arable land. People seem to have had two goes at defining a line. The small woodland is not shown on the map.

Hyvä valinta
Hyvä sijainti. Vanha kaupunki ihan vieressä. Samoin lauttasatama, jos menossa Isle of wightille. Autoparkki ihan hotellin vieressä, maksoi 7 puntaa/vrk. Hyvä monipuolinen aamupala. Ihan kiva uima-allas ja poreallas sekä sauna.

Carisbrooke Castle is a historic motte-and-bailey castle located in the village of Carisbrooke, near Newport, Isle of Wight, England. Charles I was imprisoned at the castle in the months prior to his trial The site of Carisbrooke Castle may have been occupied in pre-Roman times. A ruined wall suggests that there was a building there in late Roman times. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle mentions that Wihtgar, cousin of King Cynric of Wessex, died in AD 544, and was buried there. The Jutes may have taken over the fort by the late 7th century. An Anglo-Saxon stronghold occupied the site during the 8th century. Around 1000, a wall was built around the hill as a defence against Viking raids.
