Kempty Falls is a magnificent waterfall and recreation area set in the lap of a green valley. It’s a favorite hangout of local residents, who come to cool off in waterholes, have fun with relaxed boating activities and enjoy scenic picnics. A British officer established Kempty Falls in the 1830s as a place for the British Raj to hold tea parties. The waterfall’s name is rumored to stem from the colloquial name of Camp Tea. Follow the walkways and bridges that lead from the falls’ entrance to vantage points. Marvel as the milky-white water cascades down a cliff face before bouncing off rocks and into a manmade waterhole. Admire the verdant foliage that frames both sides of the waterfall. Listen to the invigorating sounds of the rushing water, which mingles with the excited cheering of visitors. On a warm and sunny day you might want to take a refreshing dip in the inviting pool. Inflatable rings are available to rent and present the chance to float lazily on the shallow water. Stand directly beneath one of the branches of the falls to experience its full force. Around the pool, find restaurants serving traditional Indian snacks and a handful of shops selling curios. A short walk past the main waterhole is a small water park, complete with a collection of terraced pools. Here you can enjoy safe swimming, ride waterslides and rent paddleboats. Access to the falls is via a short cable-car ride that travels down a forest-covered mountainside. As you move deep into the valley, take time to check out the colorful Tibetan-style homes which sit precariously on the cliffs. An alternative way to get here is to walk down a series of hillside steps. The waterfall is about a 30-minute drive from Mussoorie’s town center and easily accessible via auto-rickshaws and taxis. Combine your visit with a walk around nearby Happy Valley, a Tibetan community nestled amid a green forest. Visit a Buddhist temple and look inside to see artisan workshops. Kempty Falls is open daily. There is a fee for the cable car and the attractions at the waterpark.

Gun Hill is a hilltop and lookout deck that commands unparalleled views over Mussoorie, the Doon Valley and the Garhwal Himalayas. Here, sample traditional Indian snacks, enjoy family-friendly fun at a small fairground and take a souvenir photo while dressed in traditional clothing. Gun Hill sits at a height of 6,640 feet (2,020 meters) and is the second-highest point in Mussoorie. Reach the viewpoint by riding on the cable car, which travels up for about 1,300 feet (400 meters) from The Mall. Watch as Mussoorie’s rooftops disappear into the distance and marvel as the views of the surrounding countryside become clearer. An alternative way to get here is to walk along a winding trail that leads off from The Mall. The walk takes about 30 minutes. At the summit of the hill are views of the rolling green hills of the Doon Valley in all directions. On a clear day you can spot the snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal Himalayan range. These include the towering Bandarpunch and Gangotri glacier. Pay a small amount to use binoculars to observe the landscapes in closer detail. Both local residents and tourists enjoy visiting Gun Hill. Kids will have fun playing on the roundabouts, ring throwing and balloon shooting games, among other attractions. Professional photographers offer visitors the chance to dress in typical Indian clothing and pose for a souvenir photo. Warm up on a chilly day with a cup of masala chai tea from one of several cafés and restaurants. Sample Indian snacks including chana kulcha, which is spicy chickpeas served with flatbread. The hilltop is above Mussoorie’s town center. Combine your visit with a stroll on The Mall, a lively commercial promenade. Alternatively, hike or ride on horseback along Camel’s Back Road, a scenic trail named after a rocky formation that resembles a camel. Gun Hill is accessible daily. The cable car runs every day. Purchase a roundtrip ticket for the cable car which is cheaper than purchasing two separate single tickets.
