This property has gone a long way since I last visited Whitby in terms of Bar and Restaurant. Food, service and Staff are excellent! The owners still have a lot of work to do with the accommodation, but its got to be a big work in progress. The room was clean however it was tired and dated.

Unfortunately the hotel was under work at time of our visit hence no lift. We were put on ground floor but had to go outside and along go in fire door to get to room. Brother was at top of hotel so once down for breakfast didn’t go back up untill bed time we are all 3 in our 70 with having health problems I’m sure in time with all work cared out it will be much improved

I liked the location and view of the harbour and Abby from our room. This was somewhat obscured by some blurring of one of the window pains What I didn’t like was the quality of the room appearance and furnishings for a superior room parts of which were also rather grubby. The hotel was in the process of renovations so day to day areas were closed off and various diversions in places

The property is unique to Whitby a true landmark but for years it has looked tired and rundown. We have stayed everywhere in Whitby but booked this trip last minute so not much accommodation available. The photos in the booking hide a lot of what you see when you get there. Although staff were helpful the property lets everything else down. They are in the middle of a refurb but it’s really only a tosh over. This place needs millions spent on it and all they are doing is putting plasters over major cuts. The breakfast was ok but you get a kiddies plate to eat it from. The breakfast layout was a shambles and they kept running out of everything. Our room was not cleaned and on both mornings we were woken by water pouring in through the ceiling. The windows in the room were filthy and the curtain was stained brown. The paint job was horrendous with no preparation being done before hand. As I said it was a tosh over. Shame as it has the potential to be a fantastic hotel. We will not be returning.

Great old fashioned hotel. We had a newly refurbished room was excellent. The breakfast was great. Pity the lift isn’t working I do think people should be made aware of this and all the building work that is going on. For some elderly people this is a main concern For the two nights we were there we had a great time and were made very welcome

This hotel is embarking on a spectacular refurb. So this review is slightly mixed. It's clear the hotel was in major need of upgrading. This is happening whilst guests are in situ. So the first thing to say is there could be some small noise and disruption. This did not spoil my stay in the slightest though. The room we had was very large but also not one of the refurbished ones. It was very dated. But it was huge and it was comfortable and that's all I needed. The new signature Badger Bar is absolutely stunning. If they are continuing with that standard throughout the hotel, it will be sensational. The location is obviously amazing as it sits on the West Cliff overlooking the sea and Abbey. Very easy to walk to town. I am returning to the hotel this summer and will happily stay again after that. For anyone who isn't seeking perfection, book this hotel with absolute confidence. For the handful who seem to think they booked the Waldorf Astoria whenever they stay anywhere, I'd politely recommend leaving it 18 months until the hotel is fully completed

This hotel is under renovation so if you get a modernised room, it's probably a good value stay. But paying over £100 for a room that appears to have not been touched by a paint brush since the 1980s is a bit hard to swallow. Staff all great and the bar is lovely, and obviously great views and great location.

Dirty adult nappy in the wardrobe. I've been a cleaner, trying to turn over rooms quickly, but that really started us off on the wrong foot. No bathtub in the room, as we expected from photos on their website. Staff was brilliant and got us into another room straight away, no fuss. The hotel is undergoing much-needed renovation, so the lift was not functioning. We have mobility issues, so this was quite a frustration, but we managed since we were only staying one night. The location can't be beat if you are wanting to spend your time at the beach. View from our room was gorgeous and unobstructed. Breakfast was excellent. Probably won't stay here again though, honestly. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating, but the facilities aren't great.

Nice location , great view, nice bar, polite staff, Room v v scruffy, i know its being renovated, but for over £100 night, v poor, peeling paint and paper, stained walls Clenliness v poor, 2 glasses filthy on arrival, big cobwebs of main light, id expect to pay 60 a night for that quality, total rip off And tthe parking is laughable, i wont explain but if u dont pre book there v limited spaces, its a nightmare, bathroom v poor

The hotel is being renovated but for the price we paid for a room that hasn’t been renovated was poor and it was the same as the renovated rooms.Also the bar closed at 11.00pm which was hire early for us as we were a private party and most of us were staying there.

Initial problems were car park was totally full (despite being told no need to pre-book as plenty of space) This was 3rd party info. & did not match what the hotel told us on arrival. Our allocated room left a lot to be desired. Thankfully Michelle on reception efficiently addressed all the issues and resolved everything to our total satisfaction by sorting the parking issue and moving us to a great room. Without her intervention we would have walked away, but now more than happy with her superb service and we will definitely & happily return to the Royal. She really is a credit to your hotel!

Staff were friendly & welcoming. There is major refurbishment currently in progress, therefore access to the Reception Desk is limited (small doors either side of main entrance, or via a side door). Due to refurbishment, expect some noise / disruption. I was in a newly refurbished room on the first floor (lift not in use)...although it was presented well, space at the end of the bed was limited (a squeeze between the bed & tv). The bed was large & comfortable. The bathroom was spacious, however the toilet roll holder was fitted too close, making sitting awkward. Breakfast consisted of continental: cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast, danish pastries (although choice limited due to running out) & hot food: bacon, scrambled egg, sausage, mushrooms, grilled tomato (no fried egg / hash brown due to kitchen issue). The food was tasty. The hotel has a spacious lounge area & a modern bar area. The hotel is ideally located for sights & attractions.

Very dated and no lifts

Room decor tired, dated, peeling paint and wallpaper, threadbare carpets. Shower rail falling off. Poor parking facilities. Bar and dining area lovely.
