Fairfield inn San Marco's

We only stayed one night at the Fairfield Inn in San Marcos, CA, and unfortunately, it wasn’t the most pleasant experience despite the excellent customer service.
We checked in around 9 PM and were greeted warmly by the front desk staff, which was a great start. However, when we walked into our room, we were hit with a strong, unpleasant odor. Since we were tired, we left our luggage in the room, opened the window, and headed out to dinner hoping the smell would clear out by the time we returned.
We got back around 10:45 PM, and the odor was still just as strong. I tried spraying some air freshener to mask it, but that actually triggered the fire alarm. To their credit, the hotel staff called immediately to check in and make sure everything was okay. I explained what happened, and the front desk staff offered to send the night attendant to help us look at a different room.
The night crew attendant came up quickly and was very nice. He showed us another room on a different floor but sadly, it had the exact same odor. At that point, we just stuck with the original room and made it through the night.
We checked out the next morning. While the staff was kind and responsive, the overall condition of the rooms was disappointing. The persistent odor throughout both rooms suggests this hotel is overdue for upgrades, adding some air vents, especially replacing the old carpet and refreshing the interiors to improve.
