Real Santorini is not Fira and Oia. The main villages of Santorini are at the center of the island in places naturally protected against pirates on the hills or carved on the side of small gullies.
One of the most characteristic of them is Vothonas. Although most homes are built recently, many cave houses of antiquity can be seen around the sides of a ravine river -Ancient waiting for reconstruction. My house (carved and builded on the rock, house of 500 years of age ) consists of two large cave rooms linked together through a small cave dome corridor.
Furniture is simple as much as possible, beds and sofa beds are stone made with double mattress as is shown in myhousetorent owners association.
The main advantage of this village is that it is almost in the center of the island so that access to many beaches, the airport, the boats of the commercial port, the capital of Fira are at distances of 3 -5 kms.
You have the best vacation away from the tourist crowds, plus you can go rambling in the deep country, visiting the old paths, old churches, roads with incredible views. From the top of the village you can see around both sides of the sea around the island. One side of the caldera wild, across the landscape with fields and beaches.
