Raised water level on the River Monnow The Monnow flows down through Grosmont and Skenfrith and is one of the larger tributaries of the Wye. It rises in the upland areas of the Black Mountains but for much of its length, it flows through a gentle, fertile valley. Here, the waters, muddy after recent heavy rainfall, flow under Skenfrith Bridge.

River Monnow flows down towards Skenfrith Bridge Passing over a short stretch of rapids beside the nearby castle. The Monnow flows down through Grosmont and Skenfrith and is one of the larger tributaries of the Wye. It rises in the upland areas of the Black Mountains but for much of its length, it flows through a gentle, fertile valley.

Site of medieval castle wharf by the River Monnow A medieval castle wharf was discovered here in 2003 and has been re-buried to protect it. A massive dockyard wall projected into the river. The wharf may have been in use during the building of the castle (1219-32).
