The São Francisco Cultural Center is an architectural complex made up of the Church of St. Francis, the Convent of St. Anthony, the Chapel of the Third Order of St. Francis, the Chapel of St. Benedict, the House of Prayer of the Third, the Cloister of the Third Order, a fountain and a large churchyard with a cruise. This Cultural Center is one of the most remarkable legacies of the Baroque in Brazil.
It all began at the end of the 16th century with the construction of the Convent of St. Anthony. In the first half of the seventeenth century it was occupied by the Dutch troops. The works of recovery and enlargement were only carried out after the expulsion of the Dutch. It then functioned as a convent, college, seminary, State Museum, State School and Theater School.
Today the Center includes a gallery-museum of folk art, a sacred art museum, the Stone Gallery, exhibition and event spaces, a restoration center and a library.

O Centro Cultural São Francisco é um conjunto arquitetônico constituído pela Igreja de São Francisco, o Convento de Santo Antônio, a Capela da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, a Capela de São Benedito, a Casa de Oração dos Terceiros, o Claustro da Ordem Terceira, uma fonte e um grande adro com um cruzeiro. Este Centro Cultural é um dos mais notáveis legados do Barroco no Brasil.
Tudo começou no final do século XVI com a construção do Convento de Santo Antônio. Na primeira metade do século XVII ele foi ocupado pelas tropas holandesas. As obras de recuperação e ampliação só foram levadas a cabo após a expulsão dos holandeses. Funcionou, então, como convento, colégio, seminário, Museu do Estado, Escola Estadual e Escola de Teatro.
Hoje o Centro inclui uma galeria-museu de arte popular, um museu de arte sacra, a Galeria de Pedra, espaços de exposições e eventos, um centro de restauro e uma biblioteca.
