To get to this extremely remote low pool called the Ernst Tinaja, you have to drive a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle on Old Ore Road in Big Bend National Park and hike about a mile. It was sweltering in April but so worth it to see the pink and orange flaky layers of rock laid down by eons of a shallow inland sea. The pool is a scary toxic green, and with its steep sides is a death trap to creatures other than birds or insects. Alpine is a small town between Marfa, TX and Big Bend. It is full of small diners and great, West Texas shops. Nice street art too!

The OYO is a budget hotel and it shows. No lamp on the one nightstand, and two of the lights in the bathroom did not work. However, I knew it was a cheap hotel going in, so I was not expecting a lot. I did sleep in the warm and dry that night!

Very cozy spot - it was a great place to stay after a long day of visiting Big Bend. Was thankful to get out of the winter cold and find that the heater was already on and running upon arrival. The Rio Grande River winds 12 miles down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. When the water is high you can come down the 1,500 foot walled canyon. With less water flowing, guides take you 3 to 4 miles up the canyon with some spots having to portage. But take it all in stride because the views are breathtaking. I recommend Big Bend River Tours. You might get lucky and have the guides that take you a half mile up a side canyon. An excellent day excursion in the out of the way national park.
