The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is a beautiful hotel and the room itself was excellent. We booked one of the highest-tier rooms for a two-night stay totaling just over $3,500, and the accommodations were spacious, luxurious, and very well maintained. The hotel staff we interacted with were also consistently kind and professional.
Unfortunately, our stay was heavily impacted by an extremely large security presence due to a foreign delegate staying at the hotel. There were police and security personnel throughout the property, security frequently entering elevators with guests, and vehicle access to the main entrance was restricted (our driver was not allowed into the roundabout).
At one point, my fiancé—who uses a rollator and was accompanied by our service dog—was asked by security to step aside and wait near the entrance. While we understand that high-profile guests require security, the scale of the situation made the environment feel tense and uncomfortable for much of our stay.
When we raised the issue at checkout, the staff acknowledged that the situation was unacceptable for guests. Because the reservation was booked through Expedia, they explained they couldn’t issue a refund directly but did provide a one-night voucher as a goodwill gesture.
We appreciated the staff’s professionalism, but for a $3,500+ stay the overall experience unfortunately did not reflect the level of comfort and accessibility expected from a five-star hotel.
