”There is parking behind the waitrose and staff walked us there after their shift had ended to ensure we understood the parking App since tomorrow is the Farmers Market on High Street and we would have to move the vehicle early. Now it’s all sorted and paid in advance. Of course it’s an older hotel and everything is crooked and settled, but you should come here for that eclectic experience, as we did. I just miss the old mural that was painted in the pub before, replaced by a more modern map. ”

Membury Hillfort approach – ‘sheep may safely graze’ This is the slope up which the enemy would have had to climb in order to attack this iron-age hillfort from the south. The tops of the trees on the ramparts which surround the fort can be seen beyond the nearest tall clump. The fort itself covers an area of 34 acres and this large feature on which it stands consists of clay with flints on a chalk subsoil. Located just half a mile south-west of Membury Services on the M4 motorway, the hillfort is one of the most ancient sites in the region (the Berkshire-Wiltshire border bisects the fort). Roman-British pottery fragments were found here by excavations between 1977-87.
